About Glenelg
Why We Love Our Neighbourhood
Glenelg is Adelaide's most iconic beachside suburb, and the main traffic artery leading from busy Brighton Road to its famous Glenelg Jetty and white sandy beach is Jetty Road.
Jetty Road forms the main tourist strip of Glenelg and has more of a cosmopolitan feel. The strip is packed with boutiques, homewares, restaurants, cafes, bakeries, fruiterers, specialist shops and take-away food stores. For fresh, delicious gourmet fare and hard to find foods, or for a tasty bite after work, this is where the locals come. It's also just minutes from Holdfast Shores Marina, fantastic golf courses in Glenelg North and West Beach, the Patawolonga, Harbour Town Shopping Centre and the Adelaide Airport.
Architecturally Glenelg features everything from new luxury apartments to free-standing 1920’s sandstone bungalows, 1880’s bluestone villa’s and cottages, 1960s units, and modern luxury homes with sparkling coastal views along the North and South Esplanade. Glenelg is also famous for its canopy of Norfolk Pines which shelters the character properties along Mosley Street, Partridge Street, Pier Street and The Broadway. The historic Glenelg Football and Glenelg District Cricket Club at Glenelg Oval on Brighton Road, have a rich history for developing famous AFL footballers and Australian Test Cricketers, and is the centre of local sporting activity. Just off Anzac Highway is the famous Morphettville Race Course where you can dressed up to the nines on Adelaide Cup Day, back a winner, enjoy a drink, and cap the day off with a tram ride back to the Bay to enjoy a meal.
Glenelg - The Place To Be Seen
There are some really fantastic restaurants, cafes and take-away stores along Jetty Road. This strip also attracts the crowds that flock to the beach or the water slides at 'the beachhouse' or just to get a coffee or an ice cream, so it's a great place to meet friends for coffee or a quick dinner. A true reflection of the eclectic Glenelg is the shopping strip lined with frock and surf shops, street cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, bakeries, patisseries, legendary pizza and kebab shops and bars. No trip to the bay is complete without a visit to Jetty Road.
Schools and Education
Glenelg Primary School is on Brighton Road, as is Sacred Heart College and Brighton High where many of our best sportsmen and scholars started their careers. There are also endless private and public schools in the surrounding Glenelg district and adjoining suburbs including St Peters Woodlands Grammar, St Leonards Primary, Immanuel College, Saint Mary’s Catholic Primary, Our Lady of Grace, Westminster College, Mary Mount, St Teresa’s and many more smaller Public and private schools in adjoining suburbs.
Transport Facilities
Glenelg is famous for its Bay Tram which runs regularly into the City down King William Street and North Terrace. The STA bus service runs day and night from the city to the beach along Anzac Highway, Brighton Road and west along Tapleys Hill Road. The nearest train station is Hove.
Did You Know?
Glenelg has always been sold as a glamorous location, but its roots were always working class. During the Depression, large numbers of unemployed workers would gather at the beach and under the jetty to enjoy the sun and the beach.
In the 1970s, and 1980’s protective locals in the Glenelg Residents Association successfully protested against plans to make Glenelg the Adelaide equivalent of the Gold Coast.
Did you know a housepainter and clairvoyant prophesised that there was to be an earthquake which would cause a tidal wave to engulf Adelaide on 19 January 1976. He claimed it was God's punishment for Adelaide becoming a 'sin city'. Hysteria hit as a result and some even sold their houses and moved away. On the morning of the 19th, Premier Don Dunstan went down to the shore at Glenelg, followed by thousands, to prove that there was nothing to the prediction. The tidal wave never came.
Did you know that the Adelaide-Glenelg tram service started on 14 December 1929, although the tracks had been in place and used for trains since 1873.
